Adopt Man Lying on a Wall (1957)
“People…refuse to believe me when I tell them I saw a man dressed just like that, doing just that, from the top of a bus… It was the umbrella propped against the wall which caught my eye and prompted the picture… The chap was well dressed and obviously enjoying the smoke and his rest. I couldn’t resist doing him as a subject.” Lowry has added his own initials on the man’s briefcase. Lowry insisted that the characters he depicted were all people he had seen.

T&Cs: Adoption of the work does not constitute ownership. Due to the delicate nature of some works, they may not be on permanent public display for the full year adoption. At these times of ‘rest’ and during any periods of conservation, The Lowry will notify the adopter to discuss other ways to publicly acknowledge the adoption that satisfy all parties. This will not affect benefits and the work would still be able to view in the archive by appointment.
