About the Artist

Renowned worldwide for his instantly recognisable illustration style, Quentin Blake has brought stories to life for generations of readers. Born in London in 1932, Blake has drawn ever since he could hold a pencil, going on to become one of Britain’s most celebrated illustrators. His career spans over six decades, during which time he has shaped the visual language of children's literature.

Blake’s first drawings appeared in Punch magazine at the age of 16, but it was his groundbreaking work in children’s books that made his name. He is best known for his long-standing collaboration with Roald Dahl, illustrating beloved characters like Matilda, The BFG, and The Twits. His partnerships extended to authors including Michael Rosen, Joan Aiken, Russell Hoban, and John Yeoman, with whom he published his first book A Drink of Water in 1960.

Beyond his work in publishing, Quentin Blake illustrations have graced hospital walls, museum exhibitions, and animated television series such as Quentin Blake’s Box of Treasures (BBC, 2023–24). He created original characters of his own, such as the exuberant Mister Magnolia and inventive Mrs Armitage, blending wit, warmth and spontaneity in every stroke.

Today, his iconic illustrations remain as fresh and joyful as ever.
